"If we are like you in the rest, we will / resemble you in that": Christian and Jew in William Shakespeare's 1600 Play 'The Merchant of Venice'
Johnston, Ingrid Ann
The Merchant of Venice is a play rife in dichotomies, both symbolical and literal. Differences between Old Law and New Law, between revenge and mercy, and, above all, between Jew and Christian inundate the play's textual undertones and leave many unanswered questions lingering long after the play has ended. Of the play's many dualities and binaries, this thesis focuses specifically on the Christian-Jew dichotomy as epitomized in and played out between the characters of Antonio and Shylock. The principal question that this thesis strives to answer is if--and how--the two pillars of religion in Merchant, Christianity and Judaism, can be approximated to one another and, moreover, what this likeness reveals about the play and about Shakespeare's intentions in composing it.
