Thomas M. Pittman was a lawyer, judge, a member of the North Carolina Baptist Historical Society, and editor of the North Carolina Baptist Historical Papers. His wife, Elizabeth Norwood (Briggs) Pittman, was the Woman's Missionary Union Corresponding Secretary, 1910-1911; Band Superintendent, 1897-1907; and Junior Superintendent of the Young Woman's Auxiliary, 1907-1924.

Their papers reflect his interest in biographical information on North Carolina Baptist pastors and her interest in the Junior Reserves and the Baptist 75 Million Campaign. The papers also include correspondence with other denomination leaders.
