Biographical and Historical Note
Harold Tedford was the Director of the Wake Forest Theatre from 1966-1998. After graduating from Ouachita University in Arkadelphia, AK with a major in theatre, Tedford continued his studies at the University of Arkansas where he earned his MA in Theatre, and at Louisiana State University where he completed his PhD work in Theatre. Tedford worked at Southwest Texas State University before moving to Winston-Salem, NC in 1965 to begin his career at Wake Forest University.
Collection Overview
The Harold Tedford Collection of Theatre Actor Photographs contains 159 photographs in multiple formats including: cabinet photographs, cartes de visite, stereographs, photographic postcards, and photographic prints. Primarily portraits of theatre actors and personalities, the photographs cover the time period circa 1860-1910. Although Boston and Chicago photographic studios are represented in the Collection, New York based photographer Napoleon Sarony is responsible for the majority of the photographs in the Tedford Collection. Portraits of major and minor stars are included in the collection, including famous names like: Augustin Daly, John Drew, Fanny Davenport, and Mr. and Mrs. Junius Brutus Booth.

- The photographs were originally purchased and collected by Harold Tedford before becoming part of the ZSR Library collections. Harold Tedford purchased many of the photographs through ebay purchases from the years 1999-2003.
