Biographical and Historical Note

Bianca Artom came to America with her husband, Dr. Camillo Artom, when they fled fascist Italy in 1939. Dr. Artom had been put in touch with Dr. Coy Carpenter, dean of the Wake Forest College Medical School, who helped secure a job for him on faculty as chair of the biochemistry department. Dr. Artom retired in 1961 and died in 1970. In 1975, Bianca began teaching Italian language and literature at Wake Forest. She taught until 1990, and also served as the summer director for the Casa Artom study abroad program for many years before she died in 1994.

Collection Overview

This collection contains many of Mrs. Artom's hand-written recipes that were later compiled to make a cookbook, Bianca's Italian Table, after her death in 1994. There are also copies of the cookbook. The second group of materials are related to Casa Artom, the house purchased by Wake Forest in 1974 and used for the Venice study abroad program. It was named in honor of the Artoms, and these files contain information about the purchase of and repairs to the house, the study abroad program, and legal agreements concerning the house.
