WFU's Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) was opened as part of the 2006 strategic plan's call to facilitate faculty development as a investment in Wake's scholar-teacher model. Catherine Ross (2010-2017) was the Center's first full-time director. In the last 2010s, it became known as the Teaching and Learning Collaborative; beginning in September 2019, it was renamed the Center for the Advancement of Teaching (CAT). From May 2018, the Center was led by Dr. Betsy Barre (2018-).

CAT's mission as of 2023 states the Center "aims to advance passionate, reflective, and evidence-informed teaching. We contribute to Wake Forest's distinctive mission by encouraging the development of teacher-student relationships that prepare all students to live examined, purposeful lives." To this end, the Center facilitates workshops, book clubs, fellowships, and other opportunities related to pedagogy, instruction, new technologies, and other topics of interest.
