The Challenge symposium was a biennial student-run speaker series with the intent of bringing more global issues into Wake Forest dicourse, starting in 1965 and likely concluding in 1979. This collection contains 1965 and 1967 event records. Material types include event planning materials, speaker biographies and correspondence, research materials, newspaper clippings, event programs, and purpose statements.

Historical Note
The Challenge speaker series was pitched in 1964 as student-administered symposium to include more critical, real-world dialogue at WFU. The Challenge ran from 1965 through the 1970s; the event likely concluded with the 1979 series.
The 1965 event topic was on the emergence of prominent Black Americans, with speakers Harry Ashmore, Daisy Balsley, Wiley Branton, William D. Campbell, Hodding Carter III, Thomas Dodd, James Farmer, Thomas Pettigrew, and Hobart Taylor Jr., among others.
The 1967 topic was the question of promoting student interests given global problems, with speakers James M. Buchanan, Dick Gregory, Herb Kaplow, Frank S. Meyer, L. Richardson Preyer, William Proxmire, Harry Reasoner, Edward K. Smith, Warren Smith, Craig Spence, and Norman Thomas. George Lincoln Rockwell, head of the American Nazi Party, also spoke.
