Dr. John Allen Easley was born May 31, 1893, in Greenville, South Carolina. He received a B.A. from Furman University (1914), a Masters degree in Theology from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (1918), and a Doctorate of divinity degree from Furman (1934); Easley also studied at Harvard University, Union Seminary, and the University of Chicago over the years. Easley was a Baptist pastor for the U.S. Army (1918-1919) and in South Carolina and Kentucky (1919-1928). He served as Chaplain (1928-1938) and Professor and Chairman of the Department of Religion (1938-1963) at Wake Forest College. In 1972, Easley was awarded the University's highest honor, the Medallion of Merit.
Together with his wife Eleanor Martin (Robertson) Easley, they had four children, including John Allen (Jack) Easley, Junior, Charlotte, Nancy, and Eleanor. Eleanor died in May 1942. Easley later married Madge Hedrick; she passed away in 1984. Easley died on June 30, 1992, and is buried in Wake Forest, N.C.
His papers include biographical information; genealogical information on the Easley and Robertson families; correspondence with denominational and educational leaders; financial and legal documents; notes and other literary productions; sermon notes and notebooks, travel journals; Wake Forest College teaching and administrative files, lecture notes; subject files; and family photographs. A small amount of artifacts and other photographs are also included.
