Bought a horse of Mr. Pool – price 100 dolls. – paid $25 down – the remaining to be paid in 60 days – Mr. P. gave 5 dolls for the use of the College – Left Norfolk at about 2 P.M. – came on ten miles towards Edenton N.C. – Expenses while in Norfolk $4.58 ¾ It was a source of the deepest regret that we were by circumstances not under our control, compel’d to stay so long in Norfolk. Wednesday Jan. 31 Came on from Jones’ tavern where we staid at night to Mr. Caleb Willson’s a distance of 8 miles at whose house we took breakfast, we dined and then continued our kindly course till we came to the house of Mr. Holowell Williams who kindly consented to entertain us through the night, although not a tavern-keeper – Mr. W. lives in the County of Currituck, N.C. – about 8 miles from the line between N.C. and Va. - - - - - Thursday Feb. 1.
