He served as adjuct professor (1867-1871), professor of mathematics (1871-1907), bursar of the college (1876-1907), and agent for the Board of Education (1876-1880). This collection consists of Bostwick Loan Fund contracts and papers, promissary notes to Wake Forest, receipts, and professional correspondence from 1886-1892. Biographical Note Luther Rice Mills was born August 17, 1840, as the youngest of five children to Reverend John Garland and Martha Williams Haymes Mills of Halifax County, Virgina. Mills enrolled in Wake Forest College in 1857, receiving an A.B. degree (1861), graduating at the head of his class. In the same year, he enrolled in the Confederate army where he attained the rank of lieutenant. In 1864, he was captured on the retreat from Richmond and spent the last months of conflict as a prisoner on Johnson's Island. He served until 1865. Mills had many roles at Wake Forest College. He served as adjuct professor (1867-1871), professor of mathematics (1871-1907), bursar of the college (1876-1907), and agent for the Board of Education (1876-1880). Mills married Anna Lewis in 1869; together they had five children: Kate, Luther Rice, Jr., John Garland, Lucy, and Anna. He died August 18, 1920 and was buried in the town cemetary at Wake Forest.
