The collection is comprised of various manuscripts and images dated 1878-1912. Daniel, Walter Eugene, 1859-1942 Biographical/Historical Note Walter Eugene Daniel (1859-1942) was a native of Halifax County, N.C. He was a lawyer, a Wake Forest College alumnus, class of 1878, and a trustee of Wake Forest College from 1889-1931. Conditions Governing Access Note Collection is open for research. Scope and Contents Note The Walter Eugene Daniel Papers is comprised of materials that document Daniel's life, particularly as it pertains to Wake Forest College. Daniel's letter to his wife was written from Wake Forest College, June 13, 1894, after Daniel had delivered the alumni address at the 1894 commencement. He mentions Edwin McNeill Poteat (1861-1937) who delivered the baccalaureate sermon; Fernando Coella McConnell (1856-1929) who delivered the literary address; Reverend William Cornelius Tyree (1860-1928); and Professor William Louis Poteat. The collection also contains a typescript of Daniel's address delivered before the literary societies of Wake Forest College, February 14, 1878. There are seventeen cartes-de-visites (7 unidentified), 3 tintypes, and 11 photographs of students, ca. 1878-1912 have been added to the collection. Other additions include a poem read at the Daniel family reunion in 1992 and 'Highlights in the Life of Walter Eugene and Jeannette Snead Daniel' by Kate Barrow and an undated ink drawing of the Daniel home in Weldon, N.C.
