He was an alumnus of Wake Forest College (1909) and was ordained in 1908. He married Bertha Wells on June 14, 1914, in Kent, Indiana, while serving as a pastor there; he also acted as pastor in Greenville, North Carolina. While a chaplain in the U.S. Army, Blanchard served in Mobile, Alabama; France; Charleston, South Carolina; Key West, Florida; and Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia.
