Historical note

Jerusalem Baptist Church of Mocksville, North Carolina, also called Jerusalem Missionary Baptist, was organized in 1868 by members of Fork Baptist Church who wanted to attend church closer to their homes west of Dutchman's Creek. Its first pastor, Reverend C. W. Bessent, also came from Fork Baptist Church. He had been its preacher from 1853-1866. After meeting for years in a community church building for all denominations, the church finally completed a building of its own in 1878. In 1891, this building burned down after being struck by lightning. The church then met in a storehouse offered to them by the S. J. Tatum Company. In 1892, the church purchased this storehouse, where it would continue to meet until 1961. In 1962, Jerusalem Baptist Church would move into a new building it had built on roughly the same site as the old one.
