Matthews First Baptist Church is located in southeastern Mecklenburg County, Morning Star Township. This church was organized on October 21, 1877, at the residence of the Reverend E. C. Williams. The name was later changed to First Baptist Church. This church has been a part of the following Baptist associations: Rocky River (1877-1880), Brown Creek (1881-1883), Union (1884-1887), Mecklenburg (1887-1993), and Metrolina (1993-present).
Records consist of minutes of church conferences from October 21, 1877 to April 1942 [Broken series], including membership rolls. Other church records include a 1901 associational letter; church letters, 1891-1907; loan correspondence, 1935-1940; membership records, circa 1878-1891, undated; treasurer's records, 1890-1949; and miscellaneous items, 1891-1905, and undated.
