WFU's Office of Minority Affairs was created in 1978 by Dr. Herman Eure to foster the success of the small number of Black students enrolled at Wake and increase Black student enrollment. In 1995, under the direction of Dr. Barbee Oakes, the office changed its name to the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) to broaden the support to include all ethnic minority students and first generation college students. Over the next 20 years, the office added a host of new initiatives and programs, as more diversity efforts emerged on campus. As the University enrolled more students oringinating from outside the U.S., the OMA's name was changed during Fall 2015, and became the Intercultural Center. The scope of the office expanded to assist both domestic and international underrepresented students by further emphasizing identity development and strengthening the intercultural skills of students.
This collection documents the work of the Intercultural Center, previously known as the Office of Minority Affairs and the Office of Multicultural Affairs. Materials include data on racial and ethnic minority populations at Wake Forest, as well as information regarding programs aimed at increasing campus populations of underrepresented groups among students and faculty. Additional items include essays, event programs, and brochures for events hosted by the Intercultural Center.
