Waynesville Baptist Church was constituted August 1, 1823 by Humphrey Posey, Joseph Byers, and Adam Corn, presbytery. The church had twenty-seven members. Joseph Byers was pastor. The church was admitted to the French Broad Baptist Association in 1823 with a membership of twenty-four. The first meeting place was a log structure located on the east bank of Richland Creek [near the present Commerce to Smathers Street Bridge]. The lot was deeded August 6, 1825 to Bannister Turner, William Welch, and Ninian Edmonston as trustees of the church. In 1950, it became "First" Baptist.
