Theme Years held at Wake Forest University consist of monthly forums, interactive web site, film series, service opportunities, organized by students and faculty around a specific topic. They seem to have occured from the late 1990s to early 2000s, during the presidency of Thomas K. Hearn, Jr., but not extending into the presidency of Nathan O. Hatch beginning in 2005.
Wake Forest's first theme year was held 1996-1997 and themed "the Year of the Arts." "The Year of Religion in American Life" spanned 1997-1998 and was devoted to exploring and discussing religion's influence on America. "Fostering Dialogue: Civil Discourse in an Academic Community" was the 2003-2004 theme year dedicated to dialogue, civil discourse, and free speech.
