- description
- Dr. Mary DeShazer grew up in a working class family and first found her interest in women's studies while earning her PhD. In this interview she recalls her coursework in women's studies and how this informed her future research and teaching. When DeShazer first came to Wake Forest University as a Visiting Professor, she particpated in an interdisciplinary faculty group that fostered the development of coursework on women's studies. Ultimately, Dr. DeShazer was selected as the first Director of Women's Studies. She recounts the interview process and how open and welcoming the faculty at Wake Forest were to the idea of creating a Women's Studies department. DeShazer also recalls the challenged that she and other involved faced in starting the program. She served as Director from 1987 to 1995.
