- Kayla Lisenby-Denson (they/them) worked with LGBTQ student programming at the University of South Carolina before establishing a home at the Wake Forest University LGBTQ Center, first as the Program Coordinator, then as Assistant Director, and most recently as the Associate Director in 2021. They currently work in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at Wake Forest University. This interview focuses on Kayla's experience working in a leadership role at the LGBTQ Center, what elements they brought to the Center from their own background in both professional and personal identity work, and how they navigated a student body and academic environment that differed from their past experiences. In the interview, Kayla shares fond memories and notable hardships from their time working with the Center and highlights their hopes for the future of LGBTQ work at the University. They also discuss the deep passion they have for helping LGBTQ students at Wake Forest and how this passion helped them get where they are today.
