- description
- Jocelyn Burton is a 1980 graduate of Wake Forest University, majoring in History. During her time, she was a member of Strings, a social society for women. She was also involved with the gospel choir and served as a Resident Advisor (RA). Burton was the first woman RA in the quad dorms, a section of campus that had historically housed only male students. She was also active in the Afro-American Society and drew outside attention to the racial issues at Wake Forest University through her protest of the Kappa Alpha fraternity's tradition of flying the Confederate flag at their lounge during "Old South Week." In protest, Burton burned a Confederate flag from atop the steps of Reynolda Hall and engaged in productive dialogue with members of the fraternity to stop this practice. She also describes the influence Dean of Women Lu Leake had on her life and career, encouraging her to continue her studies. In 2016 Burton won the Distinguished Alumni Award for her service to the University and outside communities.
