- Thomas K. Hearn was appointed the University's 12th president in 1983 and served until June 2005. He received bachelor's degrees at Birmingham-Southern College in Alabama and a divinity degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kentucky and a doctorate in philosophy from Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. In this interview, Hearn discusses bringing the institution to the people and community of Winston Salem, his relationship with faculty, students, and student's families, and the building program and fundraising efforts that were critical in the success of campus expansion (Oli and Benson Center). Hearn also mentions the physical, medical, and psychological challenges faced during his time as president.
