Biographical and Historical Note
Clarinda Catherine (Clara) Redwine was born on July 4, 1898, in Davidson County, N.C., to James David and Mollie Betty (McCuiston) Redwine. She briefly attended Salem College and then spent a year at the State Normal and Industrial College, now University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She married Henry Clodfelter on October 15, 1921, and together they had four children: Henrietta, Catherine Elizabeth, Robert Franklin, and James. Clodfelter died on August 31, 1971, in Greensboro.
Collection Overview
The sheet music in this collection belonged to Clarinda Clodfelter and dates from around 1900 to 1951. A few loose items and songbooks lack any date information. Some of the sheet music contains offensive imagery and lyrics related to Black, Chinese, Indigenous people and traditions, as might be expected for the time period. Much of the material is sheet music but there are a few songbooks; the music sheets often have art on the covers, and some also have ads for other music from the same publisher of the sheet on the back page, or more music.
Some items are quite delicate and need to be handled with a great measure of care if a user attempts to open the booklet.
The collection is arranged in chronological order.
