Biographical and Historical Note
Sam T. Gladding was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 5, 1945. Gladding attended Wake Forest University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in history and a masters degree in counseling. He also earned a masters degree in religion from Yale University. He then received a Ph.D in counseling from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Prior to coming to Wake Forest, Gladding had worked at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Fairfield University, and Rockingham Community College. Gladding was Director of Children's Services at the Rockingham County Mental Health Center for five years. When he joined Wake Forest, Gladding was assistant to the president for special projects (1990-1997) and then assistant provost (1997-2007). After his administrative tenure, Gladding became a professor in the Counseling department of the University. He was also an accomplished author, writing 45 books, almost all of which are on subjects related to counseling. Gladding passed away on December 6, 2021.
