Biographical and Historical Note

The Wake Forest University Civil Defense Committee was established in 1962. Due to the conflict and rising tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, the Civil Defense Committee was created to protect students in faculty in the case of a nuclear attack. The commitee prepared fallout shelters that were stocked with, water, and sanitary supplies. The shelters were located in Reynolda Hall, Reynolds Gymnasium, Z. Smith Reynolds Library, and other buildings.
