Biographical and Historical Note
David G. Brown received a B.A. in Economics from Denison University in 1958 and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton University in 1961. He was an economics professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1961-1966), the Provost at Drake University (1967-1970), President of Transylvania University (1982-1983), and Chancellor of UNC-Asheville (l984-1990).
As the Provost of Wake Forest University, he introduced initiatives like the Spires of Excellence program, and "The Plan for the Class of 2000," aimed at elevating undergraduate learning experiences through new technology, additional faculty, introduction of First Year Seminars and more. Brown stepped down as Provost in 1998 and served as the Vice President and Dean of the International Center for Computer-Enhanced Learning (ICCEL), a collaboration with IBM from 1998-2003. He chaired the American Association for Higher Education and founded the Annual Conference on Ubiquitous Computing.
