- description
- Justin Lee graduated from Wake Forest in 2000 and majored in psychology. At the time of this interview, he was the executive director of the Gay Christian Network. During his time at Wake Forest, Lee along with two other gay students met with President Hearn to advocate for the marraige of Susan Parker and Wendy Scott in Wait Chapel. Lee was a member of Intervarsity Christian Fellowship and help facilitate a relationship between the organization and the Gay Straight Student Alliance to ease some of the tensions between the Christian and LGBTQ communities on campus. He describes the climate as more accepting than previous eras, pointing to significant cultural figures like Ellen Degeneres and the show Will & Grace as touchstones in this acceptance. At the same time, Lee found Wake Forest was still very conservative and students were hesitant to accepting him and others, leaving him to feel very alone. After graduation he founded the Gay Christian Network to help others find a sense of community.
