abstract
Predicting the effect of sharp density gradients on immersed particles as they settle givesinsights into their long time behavior. Previous work has investigated the cases with a prolonged settling rate at such density transition layers, as well as have explored highly coupled systems which are not immediately suitable for numerics. We present a simplified model derived from first principles for the motion of a solid sphere through a two-layer stable stratification of miscible fluids in the low Reynolds regime. The effectiveness of our simplifications to the evolution of the density field and prediction of residence time is quantified by experimental comparisons.
