description
Caroline Thornton was born and raised here in Winston Salem, and is now in her first year at Wake Forest University. Caroline has spent much of her life coming to terms with her identity. She grew up Mormon and left the LDS church in the latter half of high school came as a result her new-found queer identity. Caroline came out as a lesbian shortly before the COVID pandemic, but not without some struggles. She was outed by her aunt who discovered through social media, and it affected her relationship with the rest of her family, who, though very liberal, still seemed hesitant to fully accept and support their daughter. We discuss how Winston Salem is a liberal bubble in the southern state of North Carolina, and very progressive in its practice, yet there is still a lack of spaces and security catered specifically to queer people. And in a smiliar, yet more narrow way, we view Wake Forest as a progressive school, yet still lacking an all-encompassing inclusive environment that LGBTQ+ people need.
