- description
- Caption provided reads: "Cone Hydrangeas. Bertha Cone planted an extensive hydrangea garden on the western slope of Bass Lake at some point during her lifetime. After her death, the gardens were unmaintained until 2005 when Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation trustee Lowell Thomas and his wife Ineke began an aggressive restoration project to restore the 1000+ shrubs' vitality. With many hours volunteers and the Thomas's contributed, severe pruning ensued to facilitate new growth. The project was successful, and the hydrangeas bloom profusely now in late summer for the enjoyment of visitors to Bass Lake." Caption sourced from metadata embedded by Medford in 2024. Appears in a group of images called "Blue Ridge Parkway Singles."
