- Dr. Michele Gillespie is the current Provost of Wake Forest. Prior to this position Gillespie served as the Dean of the College and was a critical part of creating the African American Studies program. In 1999 she joined the Wake Forest Faculty and was a Professor of History. This interview traces the development of the African American Studies program with Gillespie providing important context as to how it was created from the American Ethnic Studies program. She also speaks to the creation of the Slavery, Race, and Memory Project and the University's ongoing commitment to shedding light on its history.
