- description
- Caption provided reads: "Camp Catawba. The history of Camp Catawba, located on the Moses Cone Estate (Blue Ridge Parkway), is well documented. The last person to maintain a residence there (until 2004) was Tui St. George Tucker, who had a life estate until the founder passed away 10 years earlier. I visited the camp out of curiosity and found people (students) still living (camped out there). I understood the Park Service was soon to take full possession. Tui had been living in a motorhome parked on the grounds. I am certain the motorhome was undrivable. On the day of my visit, music was being played on the front porch as well as on the piano in the entrance living room. This photograph was taken with my film camera (presumably my Pentax of unknown model). I was drawn to the sign and musician and composed the image to include both. Unfortunately, I never printed the image in Piezography and with my standard crop of 9.375 inches x 7.375 inches. Much of the information would have been lost if I had done this. The image printed here is a color image (RGB) proportionate to the film size (negative) in this folio. I remember the subject saying, 'I am going to take the sign home to keep the Park Service from destroying it.' Incidentally, one of the first narrative films I produced was one about Camp Catawba. I used a third party platform (not Adobe Premier) to produce it. URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ac9QtficH1o." Caption sourced from metadata embedded by Medford in 2024. Appears in a group of images called Blue Ridge Parkway Singles."
