Caption provided reads: "Thursday, September 8, 2004, wrecked havoc on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Hurricane Frances had unleashed its fury by inundating the Linville Falls Visitor Center and tumbling the motor road into the valley below, only a few miles south of Linville Falls. The Parkway closed after the hurricane, including the Linn Cove Viaduct, even though there was not a twig in the roadway between 221 and Holloway Mountain Road. The Parkway was closed 'for engineering reasons' as all the cuts and fill of this magnificent section had yet to be individually inspected. Law enforcement Ranger Hope Powers of the Sandy Flat Ranger Station remarked, 'Yep, this one is out of my hands.' Almost every significant storm in the Blue Ridge brings a unique experience of 'clean air', and clean and calm and sunny it was on the weekend following the storm. On Sunday, September 2, the Viaduct was deserted except for my wife and me, who chose to ride the big loop covering the viaduct section and US221 from Blowing Rock. The Charlotte skyline was uniquely visible from the Linn Cove Viaduct, an almost only once-in-a-lifetime occurrence in the 21st century. K.B. Medford on the Linn Cove Viaduct. September 12, 2004.
