- abstract
- Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors and non-selective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) have been associated with increased cardiovascular risk. It is the intent of this discussion to explore mechanisms by which celecoxib, rofecoxib, and nonselective anti-inflammatory medications influence cardiovascular risk. Specifically, I will present data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis in order to identify an association of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications with indices of thrombosis and endothelial function. It is my hope that this discussion will lead to a more complete understanding of the cardiovascular risk associated with this class of medications that has had a dramatic effect on public health.
