dc.description The World War II years posed great difficulty for both hospitals and medical schools alike throughout the United States. The loss of practicing physicians and medical school faculty members to the Armed Forces caused a sharp increase in patient load as well as teaching loads. The Federal Government decided to assure a steady supply of doctors and medical students by initiating the ASTP (Armed Specialized Training Program) and the Navy V-12 program. Eligible medical students were commissioned as lieutenants in the Medical Corps but were immediately transferred on detached service to medical school for completion of their education. Students received military instruction and participated in weekly drills under local Army and Navy assigned personnel. The "9-9-9" Program came in when a student was only required to go to medical school for nine months during each year as a sophomore, junior and senior, eliminating summer vacations. Typically, students worked during the summer to earn money for their education. So the government decided to give students $132 per month as pay and living expenses as well as a uniform. en_US
