| dc.description | The pneumatic tube system of the North Carolina Baptist Hospital is shown here lining the back wall of an office. Before computers, the tube system was used to keep all types of medical care messages coming and going in an orderly fashion. The central tube system room was located in the second sub-basement area, similar to a cavern and was kept under lock and key. The ceilings were 19 feet high and had 15 stories of concrete, steel, and brick. It was filled with pipes going in every possible direction and made a continual clicking noise signifying messages that were being sent 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.
