dc.description North Carolina Baptist Hospital's AirCare celebrated five years of service to the people of North Carolina and surrounding states on May 15, 1991. AirCare began as a dream of saving lives using a helicopter to deliver to patients the expertise of seasoned health professionals and sophisticated technology. Along the way to fulfilling that dream, tragedy struck AirCare. On September 23, 1986, AirCare and its crew crashed in a foggy mountain in route to Galax, Virginia. This photo depicts the unveiling and dedication ceremony of the AirCare Memorial Park given to the community in tribute to the three who lost their lives (Nurses Barbara Burdette, Karen Simpson and Pilot Barry Day.) The bas-relief is the centerpiece of the memorial park and is located between the Family Practice Building and the Medical Center's entrance. It has benches, flowering trees, evergreens, annual planting beds and perennials. The park also honors the caring spirit of the Medical Center. (L-R) Mr. Gerald Finley, Vice President of Patient Care Services and also chairman of the AirCare Memorial Committee; Earline King, sculptor/artist of the clay made for the memorial. en_US
