dc.description	Dr. Louis Kucera, researcher in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Bowman Gray School of Medicine, looks through a microscope while TV crews film during the opening of the P3 research facility in July 1987. Dr. Kucera and his colleagues researched Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. The term P3 means that the facility meets the highest containment standards of an infectious disease laboratory established by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control. The facility has no windows and a special air handling and filtering system. It also has sophisticated sterilization equipment. In 1987, the lab cost $300,000 to open and yearly costs were $150,000, according to Dr. Steven Mizel, chair of the department.	en_US
