dc.description The Anna Catharina House was the first to be built in Salem with a timber frame rather than logs or half-timbering. Constructed by Philip Christian Gottlieb Reuter, Salem's surveyor, for himself and his wife Anna Catharina, the house was originally sited on Main Street where the John Vogler House now stands. In 1816, the year that Anna Catharina died, John Vogler moved the house to the back of the lot in preparation of building his own house. The Anna Catherina House was used as an outbuilding and later as a carriage house until 1947 when it was disassembled and stored by the Society of Colonial Dames. This image shows the house just prior to its removal into storage. It was reconstructed, using its original timbers, in 1954. Anna Catherina is the subject of the fictionalized memoir The Road to Salem by Adelaide Fries. en_US
