H.M. Poteat was an alumnus of Wake Forest College (Class of 1906); professor of Latin and head of the Classics Department, Wake Forest College for 44 years; author; organist; Grand Master of the North Carolina Lodge and Past Potentate of the Sudan Temple of the Shrine.
His papers reflect his personal and professional interest and include reprints of his writings; a notebook (ca. 1907); a bibliography; a mimeographed copy of sheet music for "Gentle Mother" and the "Sudan Temple March" ; clippings; a photograph; a typescript copy of his commencement address "Foundation Stones" delivered at Wake Forest College, Wake Forest, North Carolina, May 21, 1956; and extracts from the journal of Mrs. Wilma Parrish describing Dr. Poteat's funeral, 1958.
