Jack D. Fleer was a professor of Political Science at Wake Forest University from 1964 to 2002. He also became the director of the summer Boys' State program, held on the Wake Forest campus during the 1970s and 1980s. Fleer also wrote three books about North Carolina politics and governors. The collection includes material relating to Wake Forest University, including faculty committees, Thomas Hearn presidential search committee, American Association of University Professors' committee on faculty salaries and James Ralph Scales' retirement. Extensive material on the American Legion Boys' State program is also present. Formats include papers, correspondence, reports, photographs and newspaper clippings.

Biographical and Historical Note

Jack David Fleer was born in Missouri in 1937. He received a B.A. from Oklahoma Baptist College and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He joined the Political Science faculty at Wake Forest University in 1964. His main interests were political parties and behavior, the legislative process, and public policy. He also became the director of North Carolina's summer Boys' State program sponsored by the American Legion, held on the Wake Forest campus during the 1970s and 1980s.

Fleer retired from teaching in 2002 and continued his work on various projects, including a book on North Carolina governors. In all he published three books - North Carolina Politics: An Introduction,  North Carolina Government and Politics, and  Governors Speak - as well as a walking guide to Reynolda campus, "A Walk at Wake Forest."

Fleer and his wife, Martha, live in Winston-Salem and have three children and seven grandchildren.

Collection Overview

The collection includes material relating to Wake Forest University, including faculty committees, Thomas Hearn presidential search committee, AAUP committee on faculty salaries and Ralph Scales retirement. There is also extensive material on the American Legion Boys' State program. Formats include papers, correspondence, reports, photographs and newspaper clippings.

Qualified male North Carolina high school rising seniors take part in a practical government course designed to develop a working knowledge of the structure of the government" by "participation and personal experience in a model state, complete with its governing bodies and elected public officials."Jack Fleer was the coordinator of and Wake Forest University was host to the weeklong summer program during the 1970s and 1980s.)
