Finding Aid & Inventory

Elliott Brantly Earnshaw was an instructor in Mathematics and the Acting Bursar from 1906-1907. He was the Assistant Secretary of the Board of Trustees (1907-1923), when he was promoted to Secretary of the Board of Trustees. He served as Bursar (1907-1952) and Superintendant of the College Hospital (1911-1952). This collection contains correspondence, subject files, ledgers and related materials, Masonic loan fund papers and related materials, and Edith Earnshaw's Citizen Sevice Corps materials.

Biographical and Historical Note

Elliott Brantly Earnshaw graduated with a B.A. from Wake Forest College (1906) and later received an M.A. (1908). He was a member of the honor society Omicron Delta Kappa.was In 1906 he was a Senior Speaker, a member of the Glee Club, and Editor in Chief from the Euzelian Society. Earnshaw was also a champion tennis player, with Hubert Poteat as his doubles partner.

Earnshaw was an instructor in Mathematics and the Acting Bursar from 1906-1907. He was the Assistant Secretary of the Board of Trustees from 1907 until 1923, when he was promoted to Secretary of the Board of Trustees. He served as Bursar from 1907-1952 and Superintendant of the College Hospital from 1911-1952.

Earnshaw married Edith Taylor on June 23, 1910. Born in 1886, she was the youngest of six daughters of President Charles Taylor. She worked in the Bursar's office for forty years, retiring in 1952. Edith was also a published poet. Her last poem, published post-mortem, included the lines, "Wake Forest, blessed village of my birth, you evermore will be my Heaven on earth." She died in 1962.

Earnshaw died on January 3, 1952. The Earnshaws donated their entire estate to Wake Forest College.
