Wallace Barger Goebel Papers

Goebel was an alumnus of Wake Forest College, a professor of history and political science, and an archivist with the National Archives and Records Service. The collection contains biographical information, correspondence with his mother and family friends, research and notes regarding the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the textile industry, and student papers.

Biographical and Historical Note

Wallace Barger Goebel was born on December 15, 1903. He earned degrees from Wake Forest College (1925) and Duke University; a professor of history and political science at Rutherford Junior College (1926-1928) and the University of Florida (1929-1935); and later an archivist with the National Archives and Records Service, the predecessor of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Goebel passed away on September 23, 1968. He was married to Miriam McKinstry Goebel and they are buried together in Gainesville, Florida.

Wake Forest has a scholarship in Goebel's name. The Wallace Barger Goebel Scholarship is based on ability and need, with first preference to a student interested in literature, second preference to a student interested in history, and third preference to a student enrolled in the premedical program.
