Irving E. Carlyle was an alumnus of Wake Forest College (1917) who became a lawyer in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and trustee of Wake Forest College and Bowman Gray School of Medicine, later Wake Forest University School of Medicine. His papers contain personal, legal, and financial records, subject files, and other files relating to his service to Wake Forest University and Bowman Gray School of Medicine. Biographical and Historical Note
Irving Edward Carlyle was an alumnus of Wake Forest (1917) who became a lawyer in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and trustee of Wake Forest College and Bowman Gray School of Medicine, later known as Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
Carlyle was born in Wake Forest, N.C., on Septemner 20, 1896, to the College's professor of Latin John Bethune Carlyle and Dora Dunn Carlyle. Carlyle attended the College and, in addition to his academic studies, played on the baseball team for three years, basketball team for two, and served as a manager of the foodball team in 1916.
After being briefly in the Field Artillery Offies branch of the U.S. Army, Carlyle returned to Wake Forest, N.C., and took College professor Needham Y. Gulley's six-week course to take the North Carolina bar examination, which Carlyle passed in 1920. He attended, but did not graduate from, University of Virginia's law school (1920-1922). After opening his own office, Carlyle joined Winston-Salem law firm Manly, Hendren, and Womble, later named Womble, Carlyle, Sandridge, and Rice.
Carlyle was also, from 1932 on, involved in local politics. In 1932, he served as the county campaign manager for Cameron Morrison's unsuccessful 1932 primary campaign against Robert Reynolds for U.S. Senate. In 1941, he was the Forsyth County member of N.C.'s House of Representatives, and in the General Assembly for the years 1943, 1945, and 1951.
Beginning in 1946, Carlyle served sixteen years as a Wake Forest trustee, including five terms as Board chair. In addition to chairing a successful campaign in Winston-Salem to raise money for the College moved, he helped the University of North Carolina establish a medical school in Chapel Hill. He was also a trustee of Goucher College and of East Carolina University.
Carlyle was married to Mary Belo Moore (1904-1996) and together they had two daughters, Elizabeth and Mary. He died June 7, 1971, in Winston-Salem.
