Joseph Conrad Watkins, Jr. was an alumnus of Wake Forest College (1924). His father graduated from Wake Forest in 1897 and was given an honorary doctorate in 1922. This collection contains Watkins' Wake Forest College scrapbook, 1920-1923; his father's and mother's obituary sketches (1957, 1959) and diplomas from the Salem Boys School (1898), Wake Forest College (1897, 1922) and Salem Academy (1898); and Richard Montague Watkins's diploma from Mars Hill College (1925).

Biographical and Historical Note

Dr. Joseph Conrad Watkins, Jr. was born in Winston-Salem, N.C. on July 4, 1903 to Dr. Joseph Conrad Watkins and Irene Montague Watkins.

Joseph Conrad Watkins, Sr., was a Wake Forest alumnus (1897) and received an honorary doctorate in 1922. The elder Watkins was born November 27, 1873 and, in addition to A.B. and LL.B. degrees, he attended Salem Boys School in Winston-Salem. After receiving his D.D.S. from the University of Maryland (1900), he practiced medicine in Winston. Watkins married Irene Montague on June 21, 1902. Watkins, Sr., died on January 5, 1959, and Irene Watkins died on November 11, 1957.

Watkins, Jr., finished high school in Winston-Salem in 1920, and received a bachelor of arts degree (1924) from Wake Forest College and Bowman Gray School of Medicine. After attending Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia (1926), Watkins, Jr., practiced medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C. and Philadelphia. He died May 20, 1928, in New York, New York.

Collection Overview

This collection contains a Wake Forest College scrapbook compiled by Joseph C. Watkins, Jr., dated 1920-1923. Other materials relate to his immediate family members, including obituary sketches, diplomas belonging to parents Joseph Conrad Watkins, Sr., and Irene Montague, from the Salem Boys School (1898), Wake Forest College (1897, 1922) and Salem Academy (1898), and a diploma that brother Richard Montague Watkins received from Mars Hill College (1925).
