description
Thomas (Tom) G. Wilborn, Lead Groundskeeper of Wake Forest University's Facilities and Campus Services, interviewed by Laurel Hearn; In this interview, Thomas (Tom) Wilborn, former lead groundskeeper at Wake Forest University, shares insights into his background, career, and personal values. A native of Winston-Salem, Wilborn comes from a family with a strong entrepreneurial spirit. His mother owns a cleaning business, and his father has worked as a groundskeeper at Old Salem for over 25 years. Wilborn followed a similar path, starting his career at Wake Forest through a temporary service at the age of 20 and remaining with the university for over 15 years. Wilborn describes his work maintaining the university’s grounds, including lawn care, landscaping, and campus moves. He enjoys interacting with students and faculty, valuing the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds. He attributes his longevity at Wake Forest to a positive work environment and a strong relationship with his supervisor. Beyond his professional role, Wilborn places great emphasis on family and faith. Married with three children, he and his family are deeply involved in music and their church community. He also serves as a pastor, assisting with small-group ministry. Looking ahead, he hopes to further his education in theology or explore business opportunities, while remaining open to where life takes him.
