In recognition of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May, Dr. Marc Yamada of the East Asian Languages & Cultures Department will present a paper on East Asian action cinema. This program is co-sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Z. Smith Reynolds Library. Per Dr. Yamada, his lecture summary is as follows: This paper will discuss 1982 Hong Kong action film Ninja in the Dragon's Den as an expression of East Asian regionalization in the 1980s. As a hybrid combination of Japanese, Chinese, and Hollywood action cinema, Ninja in the Dragon's Den reflects the tension between the eterritorializing forces of globalization and the impulse to delineate national and cultural boundaries at a time when these boundaries are growing increasingly irrelevant. By discussing the film's representation of common "Asian" values, I hope to address the development of an East Asian imaginary in action cinema and the way this imaginary is used to market films within East Asia and outside of the region as well.
