Biographical and Historical Note

The Raft Swamp Baptist Church was constituted on September 29, 1854 at Raft Swamp Meeting House, by the Elders Elias Davis, Haynes Lennon, and Isham Stone. Elder Isham Stone was the first pastor of the church. In 1855 a Sunday School was organized. The Robeson Baptist Association has met with the church in 1895, 1914, 1933, and 1954. The Raft Swamp Baptist Church is located on Route 4, Lumberton, North Carolina, on the old Lumberton-Red Springs Road about 5 miles from Lumberton. A history of the church entitled, "History of Raft Swamp Baptist Church, 1854-1961" was written by Nash A. Odom. The Raft Swamp Baptist Church has held associations with the Robeson Baptist Association and the Cape Fear Baptist Association.
