Biographical and Historical Note
Yates Baptist Church was organized on September 20, 1878, by a presbytery consisting of George W. Purefoy, J.H. Freeman, A.C. Dixon and C. Durham with 31 charter members. The church was an arm of the Durham First Baptist Church. C. Durham was the first pastor of the church. It was part of the Mount Zion Baptist Association from 1878 to 1949 before joining the Yates Baptist Association in 1949. A history of the church was written by J.F. McDuffie and was entitled "History of Yates Church." Other historical notes can be found in the Mount Zion Baptist Association Minutes during the year of 1925.
Collection Overview
Records consist of the minutes from church conferences between April 20, 1878 to September 1917 and from January 28, 1945 to August 10, 1966. The records include membership rolls, bulletins that range from 1945 to 1950 and 1960 to 1969, and newsletters that range from 1959 to 1972.
