Biographical and Historical Note

First Broad Baptist Church was organized December 11, 1819, a few miles from the present church on the site now occupied by the Golden Valley Dunkard Church on the lands of Aaron Beatty. The church began with 13 charter members who were enrolled by Abraham Crowe. In its first year there was no regular minister. Preaching duties alternated between John Padgett and Drewry Dobbins. In 1820 John Padgett was elected as the first pastor and served until 1840. Elisha Hunt was ordained and assisted during this period. An article concerning the history of the church appeared in the Rutherfordton County News in Rutherfordton, N.C. entitled "First Broad Baptist Church celebrated 150th anniversary - large crowd attended event." It was published October 15, 1969. First Broad Baptist Church holds an association with the Sandy Run Baptist Association.
