Biographical and Historical Note

Sandy Run Baptist Church, located in Bertie County, N.C., was organized in 1740 and restored in 1773. This church was listed as Bertie, (1769-1825). This church has been a member of the Kehukee (1769-1805); Chowan (1806-83); and West Chowan (1883-present) Baptist associations.

Collection Overview

Records consist of minutes of church conferences from the reorganization of the church, Nov. 19, 1773 to Jan. 1804 [No minutes, Oct. 1774-Feb. 1783; Feb. 1793-Sept. 1799]; including a biography of Lemuel Burkitt (1807); male, female, free blacks, and slave membership rolls; and a copy of a deed for the meetinghouse land (1821). This volume also contains information on Potecasi Baptist Church while an arm of Sandy Run.
