Biographical and Historical Note
Clarkton Baptist Church was organized on February 16, 1884, under the leadership of the Reverend R. M. Hilburn. There were 16 charter members. The church was named for the town in which it is located. Mr. Hilburn began his work here by invitation of G. W. Hester. One acre of land was secured from Mr. J. D. Currie and wife on December 8, 1884, upon which a church house was to be built. R. M. Hilburn was the first pastor of Clarkton First Baptist Church, and served the church a total of eight years in four pastorates. The church became Clarkton First in 1971.
